Can you explain what epigenetics is and why it is important for understanding life?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Epigenetics concerns the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which the environment and lifestyle - for example, diet, stress and sleep - can modify the expression of our genes without altering the DNA sequence. Epigenetic modifications are natural chemical changes that occur in all our cells, acting as \u00abon\/off\u00bb switches for gene expression. Unlike genetic mechanisms, epigenetic modifications are reversible, and are often disrupted or altered by various diseases and during ageing. Epigenetics is studied using molecular biology tools.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

How can molecular biology research help us to better prevent or treat cancer today?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Molecular biology research is revolutionising the fight against cancer by enabling the development of precision medicine. In other words, it is helping to prevent cancer by identifying the genetic predispositions and molecular markers that characterise tumours, but not normal tissues. By knowing the molecular details of a tumour, we can better treat patients with targeted therapies and personalised immunotherapy. We can also avoid unnecessary chemotherapy.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

What excites you most about recent scientific discoveries in your field?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What I find exciting is that we can now hope to treat cancer by looking at the patient as a whole: by integrating information from their genes, their immune system, their metabolism and even their psychological state, because today we are able to understand how all these systems are linked at a molecular level. Advances in our understanding of the immune system and in the field of immunotherapy are at the forefront of this evolution. Thanks to various immunotherapeutic agents - checkpoint inhibitors, vaccine-based therapies, oncolytic viruses and therapies targeting T lymphocytes - we can reprogram the immune system to help patients eliminate tumours themselves.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Having directed a number of major research institutes, how do you see biomedical research developing in Switzerland and around the world?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Switzerland is at the cutting edge of molecular and systems biology, as well as computer science, including artificial intelligence. For many years now, we have been receiving the most prestigious European awards and grants, far beyond what one would expect from a country of our size. Thanks to the presence of several major pharmaceutical companies and a strong spirit of innovation, translational drug development research in Switzerland has always been at the forefront. Even small institutes such as the Basel Institute of Immunology and the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research have achieved worldwide recognition. However, when it comes to applying this fundamental and technological prowess to medical practice, Switzerland has fallen behind. This process is beginning now, and Switzerland must embrace change in order to regain its lead. Otherwise, we will be forced to follow what others tell us, which is never desirable!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Do you think that science is progressing faster today than ever before, and what are the main drivers behind this?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The main drivers of discovery are innovative technologies, and there are many of them. For example, imaging at the molecular, cellular and body level has progressed considerably in recent years. The knowledge acquired thanks to information technology, based on genome and transcriptome sequencing (high-throughput sequencing) combined with the analysis of digitised images,<\/span> allow medicine and research to be more quantitative and precise. Similarly, new methods of studying human tissue in the laboratory, known as organoid and tumoroid cultures, allow us to understand precisely how human, rather than animal, tissue responds to new therapies. There are now ways of modifying genes and genomes to produce the cells we need for cellular therapies. Basically, the number of tools available to molecular biologists has increased considerably, enabling scientific knowledge to be obtained more quickly. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Of course, technology is not everything. It is human questions that stimulate scientific and biomedical advances. And science must always respect fundamental human rights, namely the right to privacy, independence and self-determination. The spirit or soul of humanity will always come first, and may limit the use of technology. Take, for example, the decision to limit nuclear warheads or to restrict AI and social networks. These decisions are extremely important, even essential for our society.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Research into the fundamental mechanisms and systems of biology must progress before therapeutic innovations, new life-saving therapies and the fight against disease can be developed. If new technologies are the source of fundamental knowledge, fundamental knowledge in turn is essential for the appropriate application of technology to human health.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
