The Verbier Festival has become one of the world\u2019s leading classical music events. What are the main challenges today in running a festival of this scale \u2013 artistically, in terms of staff, and financially?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The first challenge is undoubtedly to remain true to its core purpose whilst adapting to change. As the Verbier Festival celebrates its 34th edition, it is striking to see how much the world has changed since 1994. Cultural habits, audience expectations, economic models and geopolitical balances have undergone profound changes. Nevertheless, our mission remains the same, true to the vision of its founder, Martin Engstr\u00f6m: to create the conditions for an exceptional encounter between the greatest artists of our time, the young musicians who will shape the next generation, and an audience from all over the world, all coming together to share an artistic experience of the highest calibre in a unique Alpine setting.<\/p>

Maintaining this ambition requires constant dedication. Artistic excellence can never be simply decreed; it is built up year after year, work by work, artist by artist. It also demands a high degree of financial discipline. Cultural institutions can no longer exist solely in the present: they must invest in their future, diversify their resources, develop their partnerships and plan for their long-term sustainability with the same rigour as major international organisations.<\/p>

Finally, there is a human responsibility. A festival is not just a series of concerts; it is a temporary community where artists, students, volunteers, patrons, partners and the public come together. Our role is to create an environment where everyone can give their very best.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The festival is also an exceptional forum for passing on knowledge between generations of musicians. What do today\u2019s young artists teach you about how the profession has evolved, their ambitions and their relationship with music?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The passing on of knowledge is probably the most remarkable feature of the Verbier Festival. Since its inception, generations of truly great artists have agreed not only to come and perform, but also to pass on their knowledge, their experience and, at times, their doubts to the younger generation.<\/p>

What strikes me today is that this exchange has become a two-way process. Young musicians arrive with remarkable technical mastery, immense curiosity and a cultural openness that extends far beyond the boundaries of classical music. They are adept at using new forms of communication, engage naturally with a wide variety of audiences and often take a very open-minded approach to the repertoire.
They also remind us that music remains a universal language in a world that is becoming increasingly fragmented. Their enthusiasm, commitment and authenticity are a constant source of inspiration.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

We often imagine the lives of great musicians to be very privileged, but they also involve immense pressure, constant travelling and extreme discipline. In your view, what are the most underestimated personal or psychological challenges in the life of a top-level artist?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

We see the concert; we often forget the thousands of hours that go into it. The very high artistic standard is much more like top-level sport than one might imagine. It requires daily discipline, a constant quest for perfection and an extraordinary ability to cope with uncertainty. Every concert is a fresh start.<\/p>

Loneliness is also an aspect that is often overlooked. Many artists spend much of their lives travelling between aeroplanes, hotels and concert halls. They must maintain their personal balance whilst remaining creative and emotionally available. The challenge is all the greater given that our era values immediacy and constant visibility. Yet true artistic maturity can only be achieved over time. A festival such as Verbier also has a responsibility to provide an environment where artists can develop sustainably, without being held captive by the sole logic of performance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

You have established a partnership with Swiss Who\u2019s Who, The Swiss Leading Network. How important do you think networking and exchanges between leaders are?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Today\u2019s major challenges extend far beyond the boundaries of individual sectors. Leaders in the fields of culture, finance, industry, science and technology are all faced with the same issues: attracting talent, building for the long term, managing uncertainty and supporting change. Networks come into their own when they facilitate dialogue between these different worlds. They build bridges between different experiences and foster a collective intelligence that no one could develop on their own.<\/p>

The partnership with Swiss Who\u2019s Who is part of this approach. You operate at the crossroads of the worlds of finance, leadership and culture. What qualities have become essential for successfully leading an international cultural institution in such a complex environment?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Culture is sometimes seen as a world of its own. In reality, the demands of leadership in this field are extremely high. It requires a clear vision, but also a great deal of humility. Artists do not manage themselves; they support one another. Patrons are not won over by figures alone; they are drawn to a project and its values. Teams need direction just as much as they need trust.<\/p>

My career in finance has taught me the importance of discipline, governance and a long-term perspective. The world of culture has reminded me that creativity, emotion and intuition are just as essential. The greatest institutions are those that know how to combine these two dimensions without ever sacrificing one for the other.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Verbier Festival\u2019s 2026 programme brings together both legendary figures and a new generation of artists, including Khatia Buniatishvili, Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin and Yunchan Lim. How do you strike a balance between major international stars and emerging young talent?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

This balance has been at the heart of the Verbier Festival\u2019s identity for thirty-four years and stems from its founder\u2019s original vision. The very greatest artists are not merely exceptional performers; they embody a tradition, a legacy and a certain idea of musical excellence. Their presence lends the Festival an unrivalled historical depth.<\/p>

Alongside them, young artists bring the energy, boldness and fresh perspectives that will shape the music of tomorrow. When these two generations come together, something unique happens. It is no longer just a programme; it is a living legacy. Our ambition is precisely to create these encounters. Many young musicians who were students in Verbier are now among the world\u2019s leading soloists. This is one of the Verbier Festival\u2019s greatest sources of pride.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

There is a lot of talk these days about \u201csmart leadership\u201d. In your view, what will a smart leader be like in 2026?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Smart leadership is not about having all the answers. In a world that has become more complex, no one person has all the answers. A smart leader is, first and foremost, someone who knows how to surround themselves with the best people, listen to different points of view and create the conditions in which talent can flourish. They inspire rather than control.<\/p>

I also believe that the leadership of tomorrow will be based more on trust than on authority, on consistency rather than on communication, and on the ability to inspire rather than simply to manage. Finally, genuine empathy strikes me as absolutely essential. The institutions that stand the test of time are those that know how to evolve without losing their soul. Ultimately, that is the finest definition of leadership I know.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Verbier Festival will continue to make its mark on the international stage in 2026 with a new edition scheduled to take place from 16 July to 2 August. Among the highlights, the recital by pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, scheduled for 22 July at the Salle des Combins, promises to be one of the summer\u2019s major musical events, with a programme featuring works by Satie, Chopin, Bach, Schubert, Couperin and Liszt.<\/p>
