The Swiss watchmaking industry is undergoing a period of profound change, characterised by geopolitical uncertainties, shifting consumer expectations and the emergence of new markets. In your view, what are the main challenges it will face in the coming years?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The industry will have to set out once more to win over new customers. It has lost around 45 million customers over the past 10 years, thereby losing 40% of its sales volume, and has offset this by moving upmarket; whilst this strategy has been successful in terms of sales and profits, it has left many key watchmaking subcontractors, as well as numerous brands with relatively weak or generic positioning, in a precarious situation. <\/p>

Of course, smartwatches have contributed to this loss of customers, but that is not the only reason, as mechanical watches lost 25% over the period \u2013 less than quartz watches, but still a significant figure. This will require innovation, competitive value for money and a repositioning of the \u2018Swiss Made\u2019 label, which is currently of relatively little significance in many markets. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Bulgari has established itself as a major player in contemporary fine watchmaking by combining Italian creativity, Swiss craftsmanship and innovation. What are your ambitions today for the development of Bulgari\u2019s watchmaking business?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Bvlgari will always remain, first and foremost, a leading jeweller \u2013 its core business since 1884. That said, this does not prevent the company from developing its watchmaking business as a second pillar, particularly as Bvlgari has been manufacturing watches since 1919 and possesses unique, highly integrated expertise spanning movements, cases and dials, enabling it to play a leading role in high-end everyday watchmaking for both men and women, whilst also being one of the most innovative brands in the field of grand complications priced at CHF 950,000 or jewellery watches that can exceed one million Swiss francs. In fact, Bvlgari Watches has almost doubled in size since the Covid pandemic, representing one of the strongest growth rates in the sector.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Independence is often presented as a virtue in asset management. But what does it actually entail in terms of accountability, discipline and investment convictions?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

More than just \u2018flat\u2019 \u2013 which is a bit of an oversimplification \u2013 I would rather describe it as \u2018ultra-small\u2019, combined with a reinvention and simplification of the watchmaking process without compromising its precision, power reserve or reliability. This slimming down has been hailed not only by the industry but also by experts and collectors, resulting in around ten Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix awards, including the prestigious Golden Needle for the Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Geneva Watch Days have seen remarkable growth since their inception in 2020. How do you explain this success and, in your view, what sets their positioning apart from that of other major international watch events?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

We created a completely new format \u2013 agile, flexible, self-managed, decentralised and with pricing based on brand size \u2013 in order to adapt to the constraints of the Covid-19 pandemic at the time. Without realising it, we had in fact given rise to a new generation of events, one that is less transactional and more cultural and educational, particularly suited to the needs of small- to medium-sized brand collectors seeking to raise their profile, expand their distribution channels and deepen their knowledge \u2013 collectors who were struggling to find their place at the major trade fairs of the time, which have since disappeared: Baselworld and the SIHH.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

What are your ambitions for the Geneva Watch Days over the coming years?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To continue to make it a unique, accessible and inclusive cultural celebration that brings together both major and smaller brands in a spirit of collective sharing rather than individual rivalry, whilst maintaining an unwavering focus on creativity, as evidenced by the 35% trophies awarded at the Grand Prix d\u2019Horlogerie de Gen\u00e8ve to brands participating in the Geneva Watch Days since the event\u2019s inception. We wish to strengthen the quality and depth of our relationships, which unfortunately means we have to cap the number of participants at a maximum of 60\u201370. Costs remain very low and are linked to the turnover of the participating companies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Finally, here at Swiss Who\u2019s Who we talk a great deal about \u00absmart leadership\u00bb. What is your own definition of a smart leader, and what qualities do you think will set tomorrow\u2019s top leaders apart?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

There is no single, universal style of leadership set in stone since the days of Darius, Alexander the Great or Augustus. In my view, a good leader is, above all, a curious person who respects others, knows how to listen to them, whilst also having a mind that enjoys taking a broad view, making comparisons and seeking to understand. To build a clear vision and ambition, and through their enthusiasm, clarity, ability to simplify matters and energy, to convey this to their teams, who then take ownership of it by being given both the trust and the authority to implement projects, whilst also taking responsibility for the results. <\/p>

Finally, a true leader is not afraid to make mistakes, provided they are convinced that they will learn from them and that the greatest risk is not taking any risks at all. They are like a conductor who is not a virtuoso on any instrument but knows how to surround themselves with the best musicians and motivate them to excel by setting a collective tempo that will leave the audience with an unforgettable experience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
