Fri Art launched its activities at the end of the 1970s. Fri Art 81, an ambitious exhibition organized within the framework of the 500-year anniversary of Fribourg’s accession to the Swiss Confederation brought together some sixty artists – both Swiss and international - in the old seminar building in Fribourg. Fri Art then presented an exhibition located within five different sites in New York under the title Fri Art made in Switzerland. Several years of activism were necessary before landing an adequate space to host the association’s activities: in 1990, the City of Fribourg granted Fri Art a part of a 19th-century factory that served as a night shelter located next to the Motta swimming pool in the old town.
